STCs are government incentives that help reduce the upfront cost of installing your solar system. The value of STCs your system receives differs depending on its size and location.
As a guide, one certificate is equal to one megawatt hour of eligible renewable electricity either generated or displaced by the system.
You can calculate the number of certificates a system may be eligible for using the  small generation unit STC calculator.

Once created and validated, these certificates act as a form of currency and can be sold to recoup a portion of the cost of purchasing and installing the system, or transferred to other individuals and businesses at a negotiated price.

What is taken into consideration when calculating energy produced -
  • Size of the system, e.g., 1.5 kw or 5kw. Larger the capacity, greater the energy generated.
  • Deeming period - currently federal government has stipulated this to be 12 years for 2019. This will drop to 11 years in 2020.
  • Location of installation, e.g., Melbourne or Sydney or Cairns. All of Australian towns have been allocated zone ratings based on average annual hours of sunshine the town gets. Townsville has a zone rating of 1, Sydney 3 and Melbourne 4. This rating suggests how much energy is likely to be generated by each KW of installation over a year. Rating 4 location has value of 1.185, meaning each year a 1kw installation in Melbourne would be attributed as creating 1.185 mW of energy.
  • No of STC's for year 2019 = (12*1)*zone rating capacity installed (kW)
              A  5 kw system in Melbourne would create 5.0*11*1.185 = 65 certificates
